A traditional, comforting chili made with ground beef, kidney beans, and a homemade chili seasoning blend, reminiscent of mom’s kitchen flavors.

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 1 pound 90% lean ground beef
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons chili powder*
  • 2 tablespoons ground cumin
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper** (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 (15 oz.) can petite diced tomatoes
  • 1 (16 oz.) can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce

Instructions

  1. Dice the medium yellow onion.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large soup pot over medium-high heat.
  3. Add the diced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes, until softened and fragrant.
  4. Add 1 pound ground beef to the pot and break it apart with a wooden spoon.
  5. Cook the beef, stirring occasionally, 6–7 minutes until completely browned.
  6. Sprinkle in 2 1/2 tablespoons chili powder, 2 tablespoons ground cumin, 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons tomato paste, 1 tablespoon garlic powder, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, and optional 1/4 teaspoon cayenne; stir well to combine.
  7. Drain and rinse the 16 oz. can of red kidney beans.
  8. Pour in the 15 oz. can diced tomatoes, drained and rinsed kidney beans, 1 1/2 cups beef broth, and 8 oz. tomato sauce.
  9. Stir everything to combine.
  10. Simmer the chili gently, uncovered, about 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  11. Optional: during simmering, add a splash of Worcestershire sauce or 1 teaspoon cocoa powder for extra depth.
  12. Turn off the heat and let the chili rest 5–10 minutes before serving to let flavors meld.

Notes

*Remember, chili powders vary a lot—so adjust how much you add depending on how spicy you like it., **Cayenne pepper is optional and usually skipped for children; hot sauce can be served on the side for added heat.
